Ο ισχυρισμός που κυκλοφόρησε την Κυριακή 25 Αυγούστου, από τη Μόσχα μέχρι το Σαν Φρανσίσκο, αναφέρει ότι η σύλληψη του ιδρυτή του Telegram από τη γαλλική αστυνομία συνιστά επίθεση κατά της ελευθερίας της έκφρασης. «Ο Πάβελ Ντούροφ βρίσκεται στις γαλλικές φυλακές και αυτό αποτελεί προειδοποίηση για όλες τις πλατφόρμες που αρνούνται να λογοκρίνουν την αλήθεια κατ’ απαίτηση των κυβερνήσεων», δήλωσε ο ακροδεξιός Αμερικανός παρουσιαστής Τάκερ Κάρλσον. «Σπουδαία διαφήμιση για την πρώτη τροπολογία του αμερικανικού Συντάγματος», ειρωνεύτηκε ο Ίλον Μασκ.
Πολλοί Ρώσοι πολιτικοί χαρακτήρισαν τη σύλληψη «πολιτική». Ωστόσο, οι κατηγορίες αυτές είναι κωμικές. It is not surprising that Russia, where simply being a journalist can lead to arrest, is trying to exploit this event. What is peculiar is that several of Silicon Valley’s wealthiest investors and entrepreneurs, such as Sean Maguire and Paul Graham, who, like Musk, are supporters of Donald Trump, are siding with it. Their argument, popular among gun rights advocates, states that platforms are not responsible for the actions of those who use them. This is incorrect: Telegram is not a technology, but a private platform, with its own rules and responsibilities.
The arrest of Ντούροφ comes after years of communication between the application and the governments of dozens of countries that accuse him of failing to cooperate even in serious criminal cases. It is therefore understandable that this is shocking for some Silicon Valley entrepreneurs who are used to breaking laws without any repercussions. It demonstrates that even a billionaire running a platform with hundreds of millions of users cannot indefinitely ignore the rules of a country where he not only wants to conduct business but also to travel for leisure.
